Fashion History: Breton Stripes

Ich habe mir überlegt mal eine neue Kategorie einzuführen: Fashion History. 

Jede Woche werde ich etwas über die wichtigsten Fashion- Ereignisse posten :) 

Das Breton Shirt 

Das Breton Shirt wurde am 27. Mai 1858 als Uniform der französischen Seemänner der Bretagne eingeführt. Die einzelnen Streifen stehen für die gewonnen Kriege Napoleons: es sollten also insgesamt 21 Streifen sein. Die Streifen waren in den Wellen einfach zu erkennen und so ideal für die Navy. 

In den 1950ern und 60ern wurde das Shirt die Uniform der alternativen Szene. 

Coco Chanel und das Breton Shirt 

Während eines Ausflugs an die französische Küste entdeckte Coco Chanel das Breton Shirt und übernahm dies in ihrer Nautical Kollektion 1917. Es wurde dadurch zum Symbol des hochbürgerlichen Lebensstils der Vorkriegsjahre. Coco Chanel befreite so die Frauen aus den Korsetts. Die steigende Beliebtheit von Ausflügen ans Meer, wie Saint Tropez, begünstigte diese Entwicklung. Coco Chanel kombinierte das Breton Shirt mit langen, weiten Shorts. 

In den 1930ern wurde das Shirt mit Shorts, Blazer und Halstüchern kombiniert. 

Bekannt wurde das Shirt unter anderem durch Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, Brigitte Bardot, Pablo Picasso, Edie Sedgwick, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Audrey Hepburn und James Dean. 

Jean-Paul Gaultier übernahm das Shirt in seine Kollektionen und widmete ihm den Duft Le Male. 

Heute steht das Shirt für den Pariser Chic und wird von Kate Moss, Alexa Chung oder Audrey Tautou getragen.

Breton Shirt 

The Breton Shirt was introduce on the 27th Mai 1858 as a uniform of french navy in Brettany. The single stripes represent Napoleon's victories: it therefore should be 21 stripes. The striped shirt was easy to recognize in the waves, hence it was perfect for the sailors. 

In the 1950s and 60s the shirt became the uniform of the alternative scene. 

Coco Chanel and the Breton Shirt 

During a trip to the french coast Coco Chanel discovered the striped sailor shirt and applied it to her Nautical Collection 1917. It became the symbol of the haute-bourgeois lifestyle of the pre-war years. She freed the women from the corsets, which was supported by the upcoming popularity of trips to the seaside, like Saint Tropez. Coco Chanel designed the shirt with long, wide shorts. 

In the 1930s the shirt was combined with a blazer, cravat and shorts. 

The Breton Shirt was made popular by Marily Monroe, Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Audrey Hepburn and James Dean. 

Jean-Paul Gaultier adapted the shirt to his collections and dedicated the scent Le Mal to it. 

Today the shirt is worn by Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Audrey Tautou.
